The Yamaha V-Star 650 seems to be the better deal in terms of price (same as the Shadow VLX). Right now it is a hot selling bike. See the posting near by here. It might even be hard to find a V-Star as the riding season wears on, but from everything I hear it is a way to go if you don't want a larger bike (V-Star 1100, Road-Star or the Intruders).
The Savage is really in a class by itself (corny, I know, but what else can you get new for $4k).
